Tao is a Chinese character that stands for Taoism. a path, a way of life that each of us must chose. The pattern here is carved out of a stone, the symbol in the middle is a monk and on the is a phoenix hair pin. Many Taoist monks have long hair worn up in a topknot, with a hair pin to hold it in place.
The monk sits in a temple of Tao. The characters represents the picture and the picture represents the characters. They both represent the monk and the word itself.
